Easter Day 3
With heavy hearts they took their homeward road,
Their Master had been scorned and crucified;
A stranger shared the meaning of their load
And, citing scripture, showed why He had died:
As guest He took the proffered loaf of bread
And, like the traveller, remained concealed;
But when He broke it, with the words He said,
His person and His Triumph were revealed.
Teach us to bear our burden on the way,
Alive to Your companionship of Grace,
That we may hear the truth of what You say
Through worship in a quiet, humble place:
And may we make Emmaus in our home
Where You are welcomed as our honoured guest;
That we might, with Your presence, overcome
Our inner loneliness and take our rest.
