Ash Wednesday to Pentecost
The Cross that Made Him King
- The Prince of Peace surveyed
The ruins of his crown
On David's thronged and febrile streets
As Hosannas rained down:
But He already knew
What Passover would bring,
Though Priests and Governors might pronounce,
The Cross would make Him King. - The love of power destroys
The gentlest of prayers
But we must not refuse the call
To soften human cares:
Whatever trials we face
Must be our offering
Laid at the feet of Him who bore
The Cross that made Him King. - We will not rule in vain
Where power springs from love,
Where acts of soaring eagles
Are obedient to the dove:
Those with the moral power
Must risk its conquering,
As Jesus three times fell beneath
The Cross that made Him King. - Our model is a child
Born in a lowly state
Whose meekness and humility
Combined to make him great:
Our icon is a Son
Whose selfless suffering
Gained him eternal power through
The Cross that made Him King.
