Kataluma
In the crowded Kataluma
with no space to lie and rest
Mary the mother of God smiled sweetly
with her baby at her breast:
So tired, so tired,
so bravely she smiled
and wondered what would become
of her saviour child.
As the space became more crowded
and the wine began to flow
Joseph, the Galilean exile
watched the animals below:
So calm, so calm
she knelt as if to pray
then gently laid her baby
safely in the scented hay.
Thus our Lord was born in uproar
among those he came to save
and not in a lonely stable
as quiet as the grave:
so loud, so loud
that he started from his rest
and wailed among the people
then sought comfort from the breast.
