Ruler of All
I heard of his birth
Long after the drama,
Hope for the whole earth
In a baby so poor.
I heard the old story,
Embellished and reverenced,
When the shepherds lacked money
To settle their score.
I made my escape
To the unfriendly city
Where oppression and rape
Were my lot as a whore:
But I heard what he said
On the steps of the Temple
And remembered his bed
In the Bethlehem straw.
Just for old time's sake
I watched his last moments
And felt the earth quake
As he made his last call:
But the news of his rising
From the tomb of the dead
Was hardly surprising
For the ruler of all.
