The Day of His Birth
When the day of his birth is near
Lay your presents beneath the tree:
Give what you would like for yourself,
Joyfully and generously.
When the day of his birth arrives,
Ring the bells so that all may hear
Good news for all of humanity,
A generous heart and a listening ear.
When the day of his birth is full
May your table be fair and mete,
A focus of hospitality,
Where lonely folk may drink and eat.
When the day of his birth has gone
Recall the wonder that such as he
Should grace a manger - and then a cross -
To publish god's solidarity.
