Pieta
1. Behold the Handmaid of the Lord
Who served as Servant of the Earth;
A selfless bond of love and pain,
Of birth enabling re-birth:
Offer a candle and a tear
For love and pain encompassed here.
2. Behold the flesh that saved the world,
God's incarnation at the breast;
She gave her milk, He gave his blood
That we might be forever blest:
Inhere the vision and the toil
To see the sacred in our soil.
3. Behold a mother's joy in pain
Wrapped round our Saviour's pain in joy,
The weak and exiled come to serve
Where pride and cowardice destroy:
Only their weakness makes us strong
To be with them where we belong.
