General (Vol. 1)

Power

  1. We have gloried in triumphs
    Of treaties and wars,
    Our self-righteous aggression,
    The strength of our cause:
    Yet when graves lie untended
    And truth is obscured
    By the fog of nostalgia
    What ill have we cured?

  2. We have logged our achievements
    Of power and wealth,
    Of brave confrontations
    And ends gained by stealth:
    But when the firm closes
    With hardly a tear
    What is there to show
For the greed and the fear?

  3. When Jesus redeemed us
    The Imperium was vast
    But the Cross has prevailed
    Where the diadem has passed
    From despot to dandy
    From bully to thief;
    So where should we look
    For our lasting relief?

  4. In family and office,
    In boardroom and quad
    What power we command
    Is entrusted by God:
And what power we can wield
    Of earth's reckoning
    Is a cruel delusion
    For Jesus is King.
