General (Vol. 1)
Strength
- Stiffen the faith of those who preach
The Gospel of Our Risen Lord,
Whose resolution, under threat,
Wavers in witness of The Word:
And if we cannot speak ourselves
At least be sure that we repeat
Our timid protests of our faith
Together in this safe retreat.
- Strengthen the hope of those who fail
In earthly favour and success,
Whose lives are catalogues of gloom,
Resentment, loathing and distress:
And if we think we lack the skill
To rescue them from mental cold
See that our welcome overflows
With warmth when they are in our fold.
- Strengthen the hands of those who stretch
Across the chasm with relief,
Of famine, war and helplessness,
Of torture, loneliness and grief:
And if we cannot go ourselves,
See that our emissaries bear
Much more than we can well afford
And thankful, deep, unstinting prayer.
- Strengthen our souls with priceless Grace
Unjustified by love and prayer
Whose necessary counterparts
Are public praise and private care:
And if we lack the strength to live
In faith and hope and charity
May we gain strength in offering
Our weakness to the Trinity.
